"This session aims to develop your ability to work around critical power (CP), the highest power you can sustain without continually fatiguing. The repeated over/under structure deliberately moves power just below and just above CP, placing sustained stress on both aerobic energy production and fatigue management. Riding just below CP allows partial metabolic recovery while maintaining a high aerobic demand, whereas the efforts above CP increase metabolic stress and lactate accumulation. By repeatedly transitioning between these intensities, the session improves your tolerance to lactate, your ability to clear it while still working hard, and your capacity to maintain a strong, sustainable race pace under fatigue."

The breakdown

Inside the workout

The target is critical power itself: the highest power a rider can hold without continually fatiguing. By moving one minute over it and one minute under it for ten minutes at a time, the session loads both sides of the boundary, the aerobic production that sits just below and the fatigue management that sits just above.

The minute at 90% of CP is where the adaptation happens. It is hard enough to keep aerobic demand high and just easy enough for partial metabolic recovery, so the lactate produced in the minute at 110% is cleared while the rider is still working. Three blocks with five-minute recoveries give thirty minutes of that transition in an hour.

In Vekta the over and the under are both written against CP, and because CP is derived from every ride, the boundary the session targets is today's boundary. The W′ balance trace afterwards should show a sawtooth that never reaches the floor; if it does, the over was too far over.

A build-phase staple, twice a week at most, indoors or out. When the last block matches the first, move the over to 112–115% or lengthen the blocks.

The stimulus

Threshold, explained

Sustained work at the edge of critical power, to move the edge.

What it is

Intervals of eight to thirty minutes at or just under critical power, the highest intensity the body can hold in a steady state. Over-unders, stochastic threshold and long sustained blocks all belong here; what unites them is time close to CP without draining W′.

Why it matters

Critical power is the number every other target is written against. Raising it by ten watts raises the ceiling of every climb, time trial and breakaway, and it is the adaptation that responds most reliably to structured work.

If you ride it

If you ride it

These sessions feel controlled rather than desperate. If you are gasping in the first block the target is too high; the goal is to finish the last interval at the same power as the first. Two a week is plenty.

If you coach it

If you coach it

Threshold work is where an accurate CP pays off: a stale CP makes the session either a tempo ride or a VO2 session. Vekta recalculates CP from every ride, so the targets track the athlete's current state rather than a test from spring.

In Vekta

In Vekta

In Vekta the intervals are set as a percentage of the athlete's live CP and converted to watts on their head unit. After the ride the session is classified, and the CP model updates if the effort showed a new ceiling.
