  • It shows MPA live on your head unit, second by second, while you ride. Vekta does not push capacity to a device mid-session, and for pacing a climb or a breakaway there is nothing else like it.

  • It got to the same physiology we did. The Fitness Signature — Threshold Power, High Intensity Energy and Peak Power — maps almost exactly onto Critical Power, W′ and Pmax. Any comparison implying Xert runs on FTP is wrong.

  • Breakthroughs are an elegant idea. The model updates the moment an athlete produces an effort that proves it wrong, so there is never a test to schedule.

  • You need swimming to be a real sport. Vekta generates swim zones from critical pace and max heart rate and parses pool lengths as intervals. In Xert, swimming is handled through the generic Other profile.

  • You want to be productive on day one. Critical Power, W′, Pmax and zones mean in Vekta what they mean everywhere else. Xert’s vocabulary — MPA, XSS, Focus Duration, surplus and deficit — has to be learned before the numbers mean anything.

03 · The detail

Section by section, where the two platforms actually differ.

The Closest Comparison We Have

Of every platform we compare Vekta against, Xert is the one built on the same idea.

Xert describes itself as software that tracks and predicts, in real time, how much power you can produce at any point in a ride. It is a real-time fatigue model first and a training platform second, and that ordering explains almost everything that follows.

Most training software still runs on FTP: one number, set by a test, treated as fixed until the next test — TrainingPeaks is the clearest example. Vekta rejects that, and models Critical Power, W′ and Pmax instead. Xert rejects it too. Its Fitness Signature is three parameters — Threshold Power, High Intensity Energy and Peak Power — which map almost exactly onto ours. Threshold Power is Critical Power. High Intensity Energy is W′. Peak Power is Pmax.

So the usual argument does not apply here. Xert got to the same physiology we did, independently, and got there first in several respects. intervals.icu models critical power as well, so Xert is not alone in this.

This comparison is therefore not about who models the athlete properly. Both do. It is about what each platform was built to be once the model exists: a real-time performance tool for a rider, or a coaching platform for a roster across several sports.

Where Xert Is Ahead, And It Is Not Close

It is worth putting this near the top rather than burying it.

Xert’s MPA — Maximal Power Available — is a live power ceiling calculated second by second as you ride, and it is displayed on the head unit. On a Garmin Edge or a Hammerhead Karoo, an Xert athlete can see exactly how much is left before the effort ends, while the effort is happening. For pacing a climb, holding a breakaway or judging the last ten minutes of a time trial, there is nothing else quite like it.

Vekta does not do this. W′ Balance is tracked second by second, and it is previewed on a prescribed workout before the athlete rides, but it is not pushed live to a device mid-session.

If real-time capacity on the bars is the thing you want, Xert does it and we do not, and no amount of surrounding argument changes that.

The same is true of Breakthroughs. When an athlete’s power exceeds their MPA, the Fitness Signature updates automatically. There is no test, ever, and no decision about when to schedule one. Vekta also requires no testing — CP and critical speed compute from training and update daily — but Xert’s breakthrough mechanic is a genuinely elegant idea and it deserves its reputation.

Two Ways To Never Test Again

Both platforms have removed the fitness test, and they have done it differently enough to be worth explaining.

Xert waits for evidence. The Fitness Signature holds until an athlete produces an effort that exceeds their Maximal Power Available, at which point the model is demonstrably wrong and updates itself. That is what a breakthrough is. It is precise, it is self-correcting, and it has the pleasing property that the athlete knows exactly when it happened, because they had to earn it.

Vekta recomputes. Critical Power, W′, D′ and Pmax are derived from the training that has actually happened and update daily, whether or not anything exceptional occurred. Cycling and running zones regenerate from those values on their own, and VO2max is estimated daily from CP and W′ using Sitko et al. 2022.

The trade-off is real in both directions. Xert’s approach is sharper at the moment of change and requires the athlete to go and produce a maximal effort for the model to learn anything new. Vekta’s tracks decline as readily as improvement, including through periods where nobody is going deep — base weeks, illness, a bad month — without needing a hard effort to notice.

Neither is wrong. One updates when you prove it should. The other updates because time passed and training happened.

Adaptive, In Two Different Senses

Both platforms describe themselves as adaptive, and they mean different things by it.

Xert’s adaptive training is advisory and daily. It looks at the current state of the signature, the goal and what has been completed, and recommends what to do today. For a self-coached athlete this is the core of the product, and it is well executed — it answers the question most athletes actually have, which is what should I do this morning.

Vekta’s adaptation sits underneath a plan a coach has built. Prescribed sessions update automatically as athlete data changes, zones move as the model moves, and the carbohydrate target on each session follows. The platform does not tell the coach what to prescribe. It keeps everything the coach has already prescribed correct as the athlete changes underneath it.

Which of those you want is really a question about whether there is a coach in the picture. If there is not, being told what to do today is valuable. If there is, having the coach’s decisions stay accurate without being rewritten is the more useful behaviour.

One Sport, Or All Of Them

This is the clearest structural difference between the two platforms, and Xert states it plainly themselves.

Xert supports up to three profiles: Cycling, Running and Other. Swimming has no profile of its own and is handled through the generic Other category. More importantly, the profiles do not talk to each other. In Xert’s own documentation, the platform does not create a cumulative training load or a cumulative surplus and deficit across sports, because those loads are not additive and, in their view, need to be treated separately and managed separately.

That is a defensible position. It is also a hard one to work with if the athlete in front of you is a triathlete.

Vekta takes the opposite approach. Volume and Intensity are calculated per session, whatever the sport, and accumulate into Load and Strain as one picture. The Load page shows how training was distributed across every sport alongside daily duration, elevation and distance. Triathlon activities are split into per-discipline sub-activities automatically. Swimming is a first-class sport, with zones generated from critical pace and maximum heart rate, pool lengths parsed from the file and shown as intervals.

For a cyclist, this difference is theoretical. For a triathlete, or for a coach carrying both cyclists and runners, it is the whole thing.

What Happens After The Ride

Xert is at its strongest during the session and at the moment the signature updates. Vekta is at its strongest afterwards.

Every Vekta session produces a written summary, generated automatically and delivered to both coach and athlete. Every effort is detected by reading duration, power relative to that athlete’s Critical Power, cadence and torque together, then classified by intensity type against their own physiology: Neuromuscular above 180 percent of CP, Anaerobic between 130 and 180 percent, VO2max between 105 and 130 percent, and so on. The session as a whole is assigned a training stimulus, and if the structure indicates a race, Vekta says so and classifies the type.

Beyond that sits the analysis surface: Overview, Streams, Zones, Laps, Peaks, Durability, Comparison, W′ Balance, Torque, Chat and Trophies. Comparison finds the most similar past sessions on its own rather than waiting to be told which ride to compare against. Durability reports peak power at fixed fatigue levels from 0 to 50 kJ/kg in every session, so fatigue resistance is measured continuously rather than tested for.

Streams go deeper than standard channels: Left/Right Power Balance, Heat Strain Index from CORE, respiratory data from Tymewear, skin temperature.

None of this is a criticism of Xert. It is a different centre of gravity. Xert answers what is happening now. Vekta answers what happened, and what it means.

Fuelling

Vekta calculates a carbohydrate target for every session it generates, in grams per hour, and puts it on the workout and the calendar card before the athlete starts.

It is not a lookup table. The number comes from Vekta Volume, the total work demand normalised for body weight, and Vekta Intensity, how hard that work is for that specific athlete relative to their Critical Power, W′ and Pmax. Two athletes given the identical session receive different numbers. Recommendations run from around 10 to 20 g/h for easy and recovery work up to a ceiling of 120 g/h, and they move as fitness moves, with no separate test.

Xert has no equivalent. Given how central the fitness signature is to everything else it does, this is a gap that stands out rather than an unreasonable expectation.

Mobile

Both platforms have a real mobile app, which is not something that can be said of every comparison on this site.

Xert EBC runs on iOS and Android and is genuinely capable, and it carries the thing that matters most to Xert: real-time MPA during a ride, on the phone as well as the head unit.

Vekta’s app is built around creating and reviewing rather than riding. Workouts can be created and edited on it, including by voice on supported devices. Activities can be edited, streams reviewed and sessions analysed in full. Coaches can open the app, move between athletes and see the same data they see on desktop. Notifications arrive for new activities and comments.

The split follows the same line as everything else here. Xert’s mobile experience is strongest while the session is happening. Vekta’s is strongest before and after it.

Integrations, And Where The Data Comes From

Xert connects to Strava, Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, Rouvy and myWhoosh, and its multisport profiles sync selectively from Garmin or Strava depending on activity type.

Vekta connects directly to device platforms — Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, COROS, Zwift and Stryd for training data, and WHOOP, Oura, Tymewear and CORE Body Temperature for recovery and health. It does not integrate with Strava, and that is a deliberate decision rather than an oversight. Aggregators process and smooth FIT file data before passing it downstream. Vekta pulls raw data from the source to preserve the precision of power, cadence and torque the model depends on.

If Strava is central to how you work, Xert accommodates that and Vekta does not. The recovery side runs the other way: Vekta’s integrations there have no equivalent in Xert, which is a performance platform rather than a wellness one.

You Have To Learn Xert First

Xert is the most conceptually demanding platform we compare against, and that is worth saying plainly before anyone signs up expecting to be productive on the first evening.

The model is genuinely sophisticated, and the price of that sophistication is a vocabulary that exists nowhere else in the sport. Maximal Power Available. Xert Strain Score. Focus Duration. Specificity. Surplus and deficit. Star ratings. Signature decay. None of these mean what a coach already knows, because none of them have an equivalent anywhere else. XSS is not TSS. Focus Duration has no counterpart at all.

Xert knows this. It publishes a Beginners Hub with staged guides — getting started, then interpreting your data, then a separate explainer just for the strain score. Its community forum carries long-running threads titled Understanding MPA and questions about how ramp rate, progressive overload and XSS interact. Reviewers describe the depth of analytics as overwhelming at first and the terminology as alphabet soup, with users reporting a couple of weeks spent working out what surplus and deficit actually meant for them.

Everybody who gets through it says the same thing: once it clicks, it clicks. The question is whether you want to do the clicking.

There is a second cost that is easy to miss. A number you cannot hand to somebody else is worth less than one you can. If a coach tells an athlete their XSS is 180 and their focus duration is eight minutes, that conversation has to start with an explanation. If a coach tells them their Critical Power moved and their W′ is deeper, most athletes already know roughly what that means, and any other coach or physiologist they speak to will too.

Vekta is not innocent here and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Vekta Volume, Vekta Intensity, Load and Strain are our own metrics and they have to be learned as well. The difference is that they sit alongside the field’s shared language rather than replacing it. Critical Power, W′, Pmax, VO2max, zones and peak power all mean in Vekta exactly what they mean everywhere else, and the platform is usable knowing only those.

Coach Tools, Honestly

Xert has real coaching functionality, and any comparison suggesting otherwise is wrong.

Coaches can build a community, invite athletes, assign athletes to other coaches, and see a dashboard of their athletes’ latest activities. They can create workouts in the Workout Designer, including Universal Smart Workouts that scale across a roster using MMP-based intervals and Target MPA durations. They can comment on completed and planned sessions, message through integrated chat, and log directly into an athlete’s profile to administer it as though they were that athlete. There is a Remote Player that lets a coach watch an athlete’s workout in real time, which Vekta has no equivalent for.

Where the two diverge is what the dashboard is for. Xert’s shows what your athletes have done. Vekta’s shows the state each athlete is in: load, recovery, sleep, HRV, resting heart rate, wellness score, and the days ahead, so a gap in anyone’s calendar is visible without opening their calendar. Sessions copy and paste between athletes, and a library workout assigns to several athletes in one action.

The recovery side is the sharper contrast. Vekta integrates WHOOP, Oura, Tymewear and CORE Body Temperature, and surfaces the resulting wellness picture at roster level. Xert is a training and performance platform rather than a recovery one, and does not attempt this.

Where The Feedback Comes From

Two platforms with similar physiology can still diverge, and the thing that decides how is who is pushing on them.

Xert’s development loop runs through its users. There is an active community forum, a long history of engaging with it, and a product that has been shaped by self-coached athletes and independent coaches asking for what they need. That is a real feedback loop and it has produced a real product. Their public evidence is athlete success stories, which is consistent with who they build for.

Vekta’s runs through professional performance departments. Lidl-Trek, Team Jayco AlUla, Liv AlUla Jayco, Decathlon CMA CGM, TotalEnergies, FDJ-Suez and Team AMANI are partners rather than logos on a page, and Chris Froome is Chief Innovation Officer and chairs the Athlete Advisory Board. Xert publishes no WorldTour team partnerships, and we could not find one.

That is not a scoreboard, and it should not be read as one. A platform is not better because a WorldTour team uses it. What matters is what the relationship does to the roadmap.

Performance directors managing thirty riders across a nine-month calendar ask harder questions than any internal planning session produces, and they meet the problems first.

Durability, cross-sport load, fuelling and real-time physiological state all arrived on the platform because someone at the top of the sport needed them before the rest of the market knew to ask. The pace follows from the same place: 80 new features between January and August 2026, with roughly nine days between releases.

If you are a self-coached cyclist, Xert’s loop is arguably better aimed at you than ours is. If you are a coach whose athletes are chasing results, the question is which set of problems you would rather have solved first.

Price

Xert is cheaper, and it is not marginal.

An Xert subscription is $14.99 a month, or $99.95 a year, which works out around $8.33 a month. There is a 30-day free trial with no card required, and there are no feature tiers — every subscriber gets the whole platform. Coaching is free: Xert states that a paid subscription is not required in order to coach others, though they recommend one so you see what your athletes see.

Vekta is €19.99 a month or €179.99 a year for an athlete seat, with a coach account free at any roster size and a 14-day trial that covers the whole roster. That is roughly double the annual cost of Xert per athlete.

If price per athlete is the deciding factor, Xert wins it outright.

What the difference buys is the multi-sport model, the analysis surface, the recovery integrations, the fuelling and the roster tooling. Whether that is worth double is a judgement about what you actually need, not a question with one right answer.

For Athletes

If you are a cyclist, self-coached, and what you want is to pace better and train off a model that updates itself, Xert is excellent and it is cheaper. Real-time MPA on your head unit is a genuine advantage during the ride, breakthroughs mean you never test, and the daily advice is good. We would not try to talk you out of it.

Vekta makes more sense for an athlete when one of three things is true. You train more than one sport and want the load to add up into a single picture rather than three separate ones. You work with a coach and want both of you in the same platform, with the analysis and the conversation together. Or you want the interpretation after every session — the written summary, the classified intervals, the durability numbers, the fuelling target — rather than the live number during it.

For Coaches

The question is what your roster looks like.

If you coach cyclists only, and you value being able to watch a session live and log into an athlete’s account to fix something, Xert covers a lot of ground for nothing.

If your roster crosses disciplines, the picture changes. Xert will not tell you what a triathlete’s total load looks like, by design. Vekta will, and it will also split their triathlon files into per-discipline sub-activities automatically, generate their swim zones from critical pace, and read every session in every sport the same way.

Then there is the volume problem. Thirty athletes at four or five sessions a week is well over a hundred files. Xert gives you a dashboard of what arrived. Vekta gives you a written summary of each one, the intervals already classified, and the athletes who need attention surfaced by their recovery data rather than by you going and looking. A coach account is free either way, so the comparison is about time rather than cost.

If You Decide To Move

Athletes connect their device accounts to Vekta directly — Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, COROS, Zwift, Stryd — and history imports on its own, with the performance context intact.

Because Vekta reads from the device source rather than an aggregator, what arrives is the raw file. Critical Power, W′ and the zones that follow are then computed from that history rather than carried over as settings, so there is nothing to transfer and no test to sit before the platform is useful. If your athletes have been on Xert, their fitness signature does not need converting: the underlying data that produced it is what Vekta reads.

A coach account is free, so a roster can be built and populated before anyone commits. The 14-day trial covers every athlete on it.

Who Should Stay On Xert

Cyclists who want the number on the bars. That is the honest short answer, and it covers a lot of people.

If you ride, race and pace by what you have left in the moment, real-time MPA is the most useful thing either platform does and only one of us does it. If you like never testing, breakthroughs are a better mechanism than most. If you want everything for one flat price at half the cost, that is a real argument and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Where Vekta earns the difference is once there is more than one sport, more than one athlete, or more than one thing to keep track of — when what you need is not the number during the ride, but an answer waiting after it.
