"This Metabolic Fat max training is designed to increase your ability to burn fat more efficiently, raising the threshold at which you start to burn carbohydrates. This workout is for all cyclists, but it is particularly useful for road cyclists, gravel cyclists or MTB marathon riders who face longer events in which fueling and saving energy for high power efforts in the final 60-90 mins of racing. This workout is particularly effective as it has riders spending long amounts of time at or around their LT1, the turning point at which our bodies start relying increasingly more on carbohydrates instead of fats for fuel. I generally instruct my athletes to use the heart rate or ventilation rate as a governor on the power output - in other words, 78% of CP or their heart rate in high zone 2/low zone 3. If the heart rate starts to drift, back off the power."

The breakdown

Inside the workout

Raise the intensity at which the body switches from fat to carbohydrate. Long time at or around LT1, the turning point where carbohydrate starts to dominate, teaches the body to burn fat more efficiently, which saves the glycogen that long road, gravel and marathon MTB events need in their final sixty to ninety minutes.

Three thirty-minute blocks at 73–80% of CP with fifteen minutes easier between, inside a ride of nearly three and a half hours. The blocks are deliberately not hard: the adaptation comes from duration at the right intensity, and a rider who drifts into tempo has moved the session off its target.

Vekta's zones tab shows time in the 73–80% band, which is the only number that matters here, and the carbohydrate recommendations scale to the session so the fuelling supports the aim rather than fighting it.

A base-phase long ride, weekly, for anyone racing long. Outdoors; the trainer makes three and a half hours harder than the session is.

Sustained aerobic power below VO2 max: the engine between endurance and threshold.

What it is

Intervals and blocks at 80–100% of critical power, longer than VO2 max efforts and harder than tempo, often with torque or cadence work built in. Step-downs, long tempo-to-threshold progressions and torque blocks belong here.

Why it matters

This is where aerobic capacity is converted into usable power: the ability to hold a high fraction of VO2 max for long periods. It is the stimulus behind time trialling, long climbs and the last hour of a road race.
