Each block uses short 30” surges to rapidly spike VO2 kinetics, accelerating oxygen uptake early rather than allowing it to drift up slowly. The following 60” portions are still ridden above critical power (CP), which prevents VO2 from dropping off between surges and maintains a consistently high aerobic demand across the entire set. By limiting recovery below CP, the session maximises time spent near VO2 max while controlling overall fatigue. This structure targets improvements in maximal aerobic power, fatigue resistance above CP, and the ability to repeatedly respond to race-like surges without a full reset. Execution should feel hard but controlled focus on smooth power delivery rather than maximal spikes."

The breakdown

The aim is time above 90% of VO2 max, and the trick is that the off is not off. Thirty seconds at 125–130% of CP drives oxygen uptake up fast; the sixty seconds that follow sit at 100–102% of CP, just over the line, so uptake never falls back before the next surge. Four five-minute blocks stack twenty minutes of that state into an hour.

Compared with a classic 4x4, the strain per minute is lower and the time near maximum is higher, because the body is never allowed to settle. The two-and-a-half-minute recoveries at 40–50% are short on purpose: enough to repeat the block, not enough to reset it. The four-minute ramp from 80 to 100% in the warm-up gets the system moving before block one.

In Vekta the surge and the hold are written as shares of CP, so the hold really is at the rider's own CP and not a guessed FTP. The W′ preview shows the battery dipping on every surge and only partly refilling on the hold, which is exactly the shape you want; the interval analysis afterwards shows how much of the twenty minutes was spent above 90%.

A VO2 block session, one or two a week for three to four weeks, indoors or out. If the sixty-second holds drop under CP in block three or four, the surges were too hard.

Sustained work at the edge of critical power, to move the edge.

What it is

Intervals of eight to thirty minutes at or just under critical power, the highest intensity the body can hold in a steady state. Over-unders, stochastic threshold and long sustained blocks all belong here; what unites them is time close to CP without draining W′.

Why it matters

Critical power is the number every other target is written against. Raising it by ten watts raises the ceiling of every climb, time trial and breakaway, and it is the adaptation that responds most reliably to structured work.

These sessions feel controlled rather than desperate. If you are gasping in the first block the target is too high; the goal is to finish the last interval at the same power as the first. Two a week is plenty.

Threshold work is where an accurate CP pays off: a stale CP makes the session either a tempo ride or a VO2 session. Vekta recalculates CP from every ride, so the targets track the athlete's current state rather than a test from spring.
